No one knows the cause of hiccups except that it has something to do with the diaphragm malfunctioning. Because hiccups are as old as humankind, many favorite recipes exist for getting rid of them. It you’ve had little success stopping hiccups in the past, try some of these popular cures.
• Eat slowly without talking during the meal. Many bouts of hiccupping start when people swallow air or eat their food too fast.
• Bend over and drink a glass of water from the opposite side of the glass.
• Eat a tablespoon of dry table sugar.
• Grab your tongue firmly and pull on it.
• Blow all of the air out of your lungs, hold your breath, and drink a glass of water.
• Hold your breath and have someone tickle you while you try not to breathe or laugh.
• Hold your breath as long as you can, and every time you feel a hiccup coming, swallow.
• Chew and swallow dry bread.
• With a cotton swab, tickle the roof of your mouth where the hard and soft palates meet.
• Rub your eyes hard.
